SUPERVISES: Development/Membership Assistant, Development support staff

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Development Director will plan, coordinate, administer and evaluate the SBTHP fund development program, provide fundraising training and support to volunteers, and provide staff support to the Board Development Committee. The Development Director is personally responsible for major gift and endowment gift solicitation. The appointment of the Development Director requires Board approval.

Specific duties fall in the following areas:

I. Organizational Planning/Management
II. Major Gifts - Donor relations
III. Planned Giving
IV. Endowment development
V. Membership and Annual Appeal Campaigns
VI. Grant writing, tracking and reporting, - Foundation relations
VII. Public Relations
VIII. Fund Raising Events

Organizational Planning/Management duties

1. Develop a fundraising general plan each year.
2. Oversee and manage the Development Department budget.
3. In conjunction with the Executive Director, hire development staff, as appropriate.
4. Train, supervise and evaluate financial development staff.
5. Identify and cultivate prospective volunteer fundraising leadership.
6. Train Board members and volunteers in face-to-face solicitation
7. Prepare agendas and support materials for all fundraising committee meetings.
8. Maintain current and accurate filing system of foundation and donor communication,
donations, committee projects, etc.
9. Write bi-monthly reports to the Executive Director outlining progress made toward yearly goals and status of fund raising projects.

Major Gifts

1. Identify, cultivate and solicit prospective donors
2. Develop systematic lists and status updates of major donor prospects and active major donors under cultivation.
3. Work with Trust department heads and other staff to define major gift projects and needs.
4. Train Board members and volunteers on donor cultivation and solicitation.
Membership and Annual Appeal Campaigns
1. Oversee and manage the implementation of the annual fundraising plan.
2. Oversee the membership program, including recruitment and retention of members, and development of membership materials and benefits.
3. Write fundraising mail appeals and oversee management of the mailing lists and donor data-base.

Grant writing and Management

Oversee the grants program, including submission and tracking of grant applications, prospect research and correspondence with grantors

Planned Giving

Identify, cultivate and solicit prospective donors

Endowment Development

1. In concert with the endowment committee, develop an overall plan for the continued marketing and growth of the endowment program.
2. Identify, cultivate and solicit prospective donors.
3. Train Board members and volunteers on donor cultivation and solicitation.
4. Develop systematic lists and status updates of major donor prospects and active major donors under cultivation.

Public Relations

Oversee the public relations program, including the development of an annual marketing plan.

Fund Raising Events

1. Work closely with Events Committee members and staff to define fund raising goals that would be enhanced by implementation of a special fund raising event.
2. Work with Events Coordinator to plan and implement special fund raising events that generate revenue.
3. Provide follow-up communication with venders and donors.

EDUCATION:

• A bachelor’s degree is required

EXPERIENCE/ATTRIBUTES:

• Three to five years professional experience in the fund raising field
• Experience in staff supervision and volunteer management
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Self-starter, with initiative and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Computer literate
• Ability to work effectively with volunteers
• Proven track record in individual or institutional fund raising
• Creativity and originality in developing new strategies for annual giving and public relations for long-term accomplishments
• Project management and budgetary planning skills
