Flat SHPO Celebrates Preservation Month at El Presidio SHP!

May is National Preservation Month, a time to celebrate our cherished historic places.  Here in California, our Office of Historic Preservation (OHP) has created several fun activities that anyone can participate in.

Flat SHPO at El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park.

We particularly like this creative project, called Flat SHPO.  Based on the children’s educational tool Flat Stanley, the OHP created a flattened version of Wayne Donaldson, our celebrated State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) and Chairman of the National Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, and are encouraging Californians to help him travel to all of our state’s historic places.  Naturally, Flat SHPO paid a visit to El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park.  “Real” SHPO, interestingly, has been here many times. Wayne Donaldson, through his former firm, Architect Milford Wayne Donaldson, FAIA, created the reconstruction plans for both the Presidio’s Northeast Corner and Northwest Corner projects.

You can learn more about Flat SHPO here, and other fun ways to get involved with Preservation Month here. We’ll keep checking the OHP Flickr Page for updates. Where will you take Flat SHPO?
