New Exhibit: I See Beauty in This Life

by Anne Petersen

On February 6, 2014 the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation opened a new photography exhibit at Casa de la Guerra that reflects a wonderful new partnership with the California Historical Society (CHS).  The exhibit, I See Beauty in this Life: A Photographer Looks at 100 Years of Rural California, originally opened at CHS headquarters in San Francisco in the fall of 2012. In an effort to make sure as many people as possible throughout the state get to see it, CHS sought out SBTHP as a partner to take the exhibit as a travelling show.

The exhibit itself is a collaboration between photographer Lisa Hamilton and the CHS archives.  Beautiful large-format color prints of Hamilton’s contemporary photographs share the gallery with historic prints going back to 1880 from CHS archives. Together they speak to the diversity of California’s rural heritage.

At SBTHP we are especially proud of the team effort that went into the successful launch of this project.  In addition to the many CHS staff who collaborated with SBTHP staff remotely to coordinate the show, several volunteers on SBTHP’s Artifacts and Exhibits Committee donated their time to help unpack and install the exhibit.  A&E volunteers include Kathi Brewster, Patricia Kruse and Richard Perry. Special thanks also go to SBTHP Office Manager Brittany Avila who also assisted with the installation and who really has an eye for straightening a crooked frame!
