Sharing Our Common Ground: 3rd Annual Asian American Film Series

The 3rd annual Asian American Film Series took place on three Fridays this past July, and was SBTHP’s most successful film series yet. Three very different films were presented: Snow Falling on Cedars, Dim Sum Funeral and Of Civil Wrongs & Rights: The Fred Korematsu Story. Each film was followed by an intimate outdoor reception in the courtyard of the historic Alhecama Theater. These films were free for SBTHP members, and by donation for others.

We were pleased to present some special elements to the first and third film evenings. SBTHP welcomed Mr. Lloyd Silverman, executive producer of Snow Falling on Cedars, to the screening of that film. Mr. Silverman introduced the film, and in conjunction with SBTHP Asian American History Advisory Committee Member Dr. Paul Mori, conducted a Q&A session following the film. Mr. Silverman shared his knowledge of how the film was made, and both Mr. Silverman and Dr. Mori had a lot of insights into the story and its historical significance.

After the last evening’s selection, Of Civil Wrongs & Rights: The Fred Korematsu Story, Dr. Mori moderated a fascinating panel discussion about the landmark Korematsu case with help from panelists Judge Brian Hill, Mr. Clair Burrill, and Mr. Ken Hough. Judge Hill and Mr. Burrill are both legal professionals who teach constitutional law at the Santa Barbara College of Law. Mr. Hough is a Ph.D. candidate in History at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

We thank Mr. Lloyd Silverman, Mr. Clair Burrill, Judge Brian Hill, Mr. Ken Hough, Dr. Paul Mori and all of the Asian American History Advisory Committee, who helped plan and run this great event!
